RCRC starts work to establish King Abdulaziz Park

The board of directors of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) began implementation of King Abdulaziz Park, one of Riyadh's major parks, as part of the green Riyadh project.

According to a statement by the commission, the construction work of the nearly 4.3 million-square-meter park will take 36 months to implement. The project is located north of Riyadh on King Salman bin Abdulaziz Road to the north, Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Road to the west, Prince Badr bin Abdul Mohsen Road to the east, and Anas bin Malik Road to the south.

The park is distinguished by its proximity to vital sites such as King Khalid International Airport and Princess Noura bint Abdul Rahman University. The park is also connected to the train station, making it easy to reach from all parts of the city.

The project design was selected from among several designs submitted by four international companies that participated in presenting the best ideas and designs to achieve sustainability standards and environmental requirements. The winning design was based on a distinctive design that takes into account the local environment. It presented six diverse patterns in tree types and related designs, the most prominent of which is the Botanical Garden, which is located in the center of the garden with an area of ​​​​more than 200,000 sqmand contains more than 200 species of local plants in high density.  

It also benefited from Shuaib Al-Munisiyah, branching off from Wadi Al-Sulay, which penetrates the garden with lengths of more than 11 kilometers and an area of ​​​​more than 770,000 sqm within the botanical garden, commercial buildings with sustainable designs that mimic their location in the garden, and a panoramic path overlooking it with a length exceeding two kilometers. 

 RCRC added that the other five design patterns included gardens of highlands, plains, hills, and desert gardens, designed by choosing different trees to enhance biodiversity and create an environment attractive to birds, butterflies and others. 

The park will be afforested so that the areas shaded by trees will reach 65% of the park’s area by planting more than two million carefully selected trees and shrubs that are compatible with the environment of Riyadhto ensure its sustainability, while also using recycled irrigation water in quantities that commensurate with the needs of the trees. 

The project will also include buildings designed to be distinctive and attractive environmental features that form an urban landscape that defines the park, as the park contains 24 kids’ play areas and 30 sports areas distributed throughout the park.  

Meanwhile, the Munsiyah Valley has been utilized to contribute to lowering the temperature to provide a healthy hiking experience throughout the day for all age groups, with specially-designed paths for pedestrians, runners and bikers, with lengths exceeding 115 kilometers.
