Trump unharmed after evacuation following shooting at correspondents’ dinner

US President Donald Trump and Vice President J. D. Vance were evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington early Sunday following a security incident at the venue.

Attendees took cover under their tables as United States Secret Service personnel spread across the site and began evacuating Trump, Vance, and other government officials after gunshots were heard.

US media reported that Secret Service agents apprehended a suspected shooter. Bloomberg, citing a witness, said security personnel were shouting at an individual in an outer corridor to stop before a commotion and heavy gunfire erupted.

A security official said Trump was unharmed, adding that the incident occurred outside the hall where the president and other officials were attending the dinner. The annual event is expected to resume after the situation is brought under control.

US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro posted a video from the hotel following the incident, saying she had been escorted out of the ballroom after hearing gunfire.

In the video shared on X, she said the Secret Service had taken control of the building, adding that she had spoken with the mayor, who was on her way, as well as the police chief, who would assume responsibility upon arrival.

Hundreds of prominent journalists, celebrities, and national leaders were attending the event. Following the incident, National Guard personnel were deployed inside the building, and security measures were tightened outside.

The dinner is typically held at the Hilton Washington DC, which usually remains open to regular guests during the event, with security focused on the ballroom rather than the entire hotel.

In previous years, this setup has created opportunities for disturbances in the lobby and other public areas, including protests where security forces intervened to remove guests carrying signs or staging demonstrations.
