Dow Jones drops 310 points at close, posts weekly gains
US equities showed mixed performance on Friday amid ongoing volatility driven by concerns over stretched technology valuations and dwindling expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut in December.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.65%, or 309 points, to 47,147 at the close, though it still gained 0.34% for the week.
The S&P 500 finished flat at 6,734, edging up roughly 0.10% over the week.
The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.13%, or 30 points, to 22,900 after sliding to 22,436 earlier in the session, but ended the week down 0.45%.
In Europe, the Stoxx Europe 600 slipped 1% to 574.81, yet advanced 1.77% for the week.
London’s FTSE 100 slid 1.11% to 9,695, Germany’s DAX lost 0.69% to 23,876, and France’s CAC 40 declined 0.76% to 8,170.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 dropped 1.77% to 50,376, though it posted a modest 0.20% weekly gain. The broader Topix Index slipped 0.65% to 3,359 but ended the week up 1.85%.
Brent crude for January delivery rose 2.19%, or $1.38, to $64.39 a barrel, finishing the week up 1.20%.
US WTI crude for December delivery gained 2.39%, or $1.40, to $60.09 a barrel, posting a 0.57% weekly increase.
Gold futures for December delivery fell 2.40%, or $100.30, to $4,094.20 an ounce, though the metal still advanced 2.10% for the week.
