Container handling rises 16% to 2.5 mln TEUs in Q1 2021: MAWANI

Saudi ports saw an increase of 16.2% year-on-year (YoY) in the number of containers handled in Q1 2021, to an all-time quarterly high of 2.5 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs). 

 

The total number of exported and imported containers reached 1.3 million, up 41.36% year-on-year (YoY), coming on board 2,973 ships, an increase of 5% YoY in Q1 2021.

 

The total cargo tonnage handled at Saudi ports in Q1 2021 increased by 0.82% to 68 million tons, according to the monthly statistical bulletin of Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI). 

 

The total livestock cargo rose by 213% to 797,000, while foodstuff cargo amounted to over 6 million tons. The number of passengers reached 151,000, and the number of imported vehicles exceeded 218,000.
