Saudi Arabia’s electricity consumption rises 4.2% in 2021

Saudi Arabia’s electrical energy consumption rose by 4.23% year-on-year (YoY) to 301,600-gigawatt hour (GWh) in 2021, compared to 289,330 GWh in 2020, data from the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) showed.

 

Total electric energy production rose 3% YoY to about 358,640 GWh in 2021.

In 2021, the residential sector accounted for 47% of the aggregate electrical energy consumption, or 142,480 GWh. It was followed by the industrial sector with 19%, commercial sector with more than 15%, and the government sector with about 13%.

The Western Region accounted for the largest share of the total electrical energy consumption by 93,920 GWh, or 31%. It was followed by the Central Region with 30% (91,470 GWh) and the Eastern Province by 28%. The Southern Region consumed the lowest share at 11%.

Average annual electric energy consumption per capita increased by 7% YoY in 2021, to 8,840 kilowatt-hours (kWh), compared to 8,260 kWh in 2020.
