China on Thursday dismissed US President Donald Trump’s proposal to ease tariffs in exchange for Beijing’s approval of TikTok’s sale.
Trump told reporters at the White House on March 26 that he might offer China a slight tariff reduction or something similar to get the deal done. “We’re going to have a form of a deal, but if it’s not finished, it’s not a big deal. We’ll just extend it,” he said.
Beijing swiftly rejected the idea. "The Chinese side's stance against imposing additional tariffs is also consistent and clear," foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said, according to the Associated Press.
The US ban on TikTok took effect on Jan. 19. However, the app resumed operations after Trump’s inauguration. His administration granted ByteDance Ltd. until April 5 to sell the platform to an American firm or face another shutdown.
