Uber announced today, June 10, a partnership with autonomous driving tech company Wayve to roll out its first fully driverless ride-hailing trials in the UK.
The pilot will allow users to ride in vehicles with no safety driver on board, marking Uber’s first experience with Level 4 autonomy, a key milestone in the auto sector.
“This partnership brings us a step closer to making autonomous ride-hailing a safe and reliable option for people everywhere,” said Andrew Macdonald, Uber’s President and Chief Operating Officer, CNBC reported.
Wayve CEO and co-founder Alex Kendall called the move “a pivotal moment for self-driving technology in the UK” in a statement.
The companies said they are working closely with the UK government and Transport for London to secure regulatory approvals ahead of the trials.
