Several lawmakers in the Iranian parliament warned Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz could be closed if military tension escalates and the US joins the war alongside Israel, stressing that this measure is a legitimate option if Iranian interests are jeopardized.
Behnam Saeedi, member of the national security committee in the Iranian parliament, said that his country has several options to respond to its opponents, and closing the Strait of Hormuz is one of these options.
"Iran acts according to the developments of the situation and will resort to the appropriate tools of pressure when needed," he added, according to the Guardian.
Meanwhile , MP Ali Yazdikhah said that Iran will maintain freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf unless its vital interests are compromised.
"If the US intervenes officially and on the ground in the war in support of Israel, Iran has the right to use its pressure cards, including disrupting the ease of passage of oil trade," he added.
