US President Donald Trump said in an interview on Fox News on Sunday that he has a group of very wealthy individuals who want to buy the TikTok app, adding that he will reveal their identities in about two weeks.
Trump made the comment during an interview on “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo” on Fox News.
He said that the deal being worked on might require approval from China to proceed and suggested that Chinese President Xi Jinping would likely approve it.
Earlier this month, the US president extended the deadline for Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok’s US assets to September 17, despite the existence of a law requiring the sale or shutdown of the app if the company does not comply.
A potential deal this spring, which would have turned TikTok’s US operations into a new US-based company majority-owned and managed by US investors, was disrupted after China signaled it would not approve the transaction following Trump’s announcement of high tariffs on Chinese goods.
Trump said: By the way, we have a buyer for TikTok. I think I might need China’s approval. I believe President Xi will likely approve.
A US law passed in 2024 requires TikTok to cease operations by January 19 unless ByteDance completes the sale of the app’s US assets or makes substantial progress toward doing so.
Trump has extended the deadline three times so far, crediting the app with boosting his popularity among young voters during the presidential election last November.
