Fast-food franchise operator Americana is planning to acquire local brands in the Middle East, said Chairman Mohamed Alabbar.

In an interview with the Financial Times, he added that the company is in talks with several target restaurants, with several other opportunities turned down.

He also indicated that there are several local restaurants in the region, in which his company can expand through franchises and others, adding that there are several brands in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Lebanon.

Americana has low debt levels, and thus can raise additional funds for expansion, he noted.

Commenting on calls for boycotting some Western brands, Alabbar said: “[I] don’t blame them for their emotions”, adding that the boycott had pushed the company to cut costs as well as look for new local acquisition targets.

“When a situation like that happens, you have to make sure that you are efficient enough that you can sustain . . . we had to tighten the belt,” Alabbar said.
