SoftBank Group is in talks to invest an additional $30 billion in the fast-growing startup OpenAI, a move that reflects founder Masayoshi Son’s ambition to play a central role in the development of artificial intelligence.

Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the maximum amount SoftBank is considering is $30 billion, but the discussions are still evolving and at an early stage, as the size of the potential investment could change.

The Japanese conglomerate’s share performance was fueled by the news on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Wednesday, with the stock rising 3.70% to close at ¥4,201 ($27.52).
