US Energy Secretary Chris Wright threatened to pull the United States out of the International Energy Agency (IEA), accusing the body of shifting toward climate advocacy instead of focusing on its core mandate of energy security.
Speaking at a conference at the French Institute of International Relations in Paris, Wright described the agency’s reports centered on “net-zero” scenarios as “leftist fantasies” that distort its original mission.
He said Washington does not need such scenarios, calling them “ridiculous” and unrealistic, and urged a return to safeguarding global energy supply stability, according to Reuters.
The remarks underscore growing tensions between the agency’s support for renewable energy and the fossil fuel-friendly policies of US President Donald Trump, raising questions about the future of international cooperation in the energy sector.
