IEA says over 10 mln EVs sold globally in 2022

The International Energy Agency (IEA) said, in a report published today, April 26, that “more than one in every five cars sold was electric” in 2022.

Globally speaking, electric vehicle (EV) sales leapt to over 10 million last year, with China accounting for nearly 60% of the market, IEA added.

“Electric car sales — including battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) — exceeded 10 million last year, up 55% relative to 2021,” the agency wrote.

In total, more than 26 million EVs hit the roads around the world in 2022, a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 60%.

“This explosive growth means electric cars’ share of the overall car market has risen from around 4% in 2020 to 14% in 2022 and is set to increase further to 18% this year, based on the latest IEA projections,” a statement accompanying the report noted.
