Makkah emir awards SAR 3.2 bln transport contract to Saudi-Spanish consortium

A consortium comprising the Saudi Nesma company and the Spanish transport company, TCC, has won a contract worth SAR 3.2 billion for the Makkah public transport system, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Prince Khalid Al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz, the governor of Makkah Region on Tuesday signed the contract which includes supply, operation and maintenance of Makkah Public Transportation Program (MPTP) buses.

The consortium will handle the operations and maintenance of the project for 10 years, and will oversee the supply, operation and maintenance of 400 buses.

The total of 240 regular buses will have a capacity of 40 seats and around 85 people, while 160 trolleybuses with 60 seats will have the capacity of about 125 people.

The contract also includes the construction of a garage and maintenance center.

The first phase of the bus network will have 12 lines running about 300 kilometers, of which seven lines are local lines that will run 103 kilometers and medium-sized local buses will stop at with 83 stations. The other five lines will be dedicated to highways, with trolleybuses running a total of 172 kilometers, with 342 bus stops.
