Advanced Metal Industries Co. (AMIC), which is equally owned by Tasnee and Cristal, completed on May 31 the mechanical works of the titanium sponge project in Yanbu Industrial City, Tasnee said in a statement.

The test-run of the project is scheduled soon, as commercial operations are expected to launch by the end of this year.

The titanium sponge project is the region’s first of its type to produce 15,600 tons of pure titanium, said Fadi Trabzuni AMIC’s chief executive officer.

The company has sent 69 Saudi engineers to train for two years in Japan on producing pure titanium, he added.

The National Industrialization Co. (Tasnee) signed a joint venture agreement with Japan’s Toho Titanium Co. Ltd. in January 2014 to build the SAR 1.6 billion project.
