POS transactions fall 6% to SAR 6.92 bln in week ending Oct. 17

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions declined by 6% to reach SAR 6.92 billion in the week ending Oct. 17, 2020, from SAR 7.39 billion in the previous week, according to the data issued by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA).


Data showed that a total of 68.6 million transactions were processed in the week ending Oct. 17.

All sectors witnessed a decrease in POS sales during the week ending Oct. 17, except for construction materials which posted a rise of 1%.

 

Education sector topped the declining sectors, with 37%, through SAR 52.3 million sales. It was followed by public utilities sector by 16%, and telecommunications and miscellaneous goods & services sectors with 13% each.

 

Consumer spending focused on food & beverages sector during the same week, with nearly SAR 1.13 billion, followed by restaurants & cafes sector with SAR 947.7 million and the healthcare sector with SAR 603.9 million.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with SAR 2.26 billion, representing 33% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.12 billion.
