POS transactions jump 59% to SAR 9.71 bln in week ending July 31: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions soared by 59% to SAR 9.71 billion in the week ending July 31, from SAR 6.12 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

 

Data showed that a total of 106.8 million transactions were processed in the week ending July 31.

 

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors rose during the week, led by the education sector, which surged 2,027% with sales amounting to about SAR 66.5 million. It was followed by the construction materials sector, with 194% increase and a value SAR 353.6 million.

 

Consumer spending focused on the "food & beverages" sector in the week ending July 31, with nearly SAR 1.6 billion, representing 17% of POS transactions, followed by "restaurants & cafes" sector with SAR 1.33 billion, accounting for 14% of POS transactions.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.79 billion, representing 29% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.51 billion, representing 16% of the total sales.
