Saudi Arabia’s drinking water consumption grew by 2% year-on-year (YoY) to 3.5 billion cubic meters in 2019, data issued by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture showed.
Desalinated water accounted for 65% (2.26 billion cubic meters) of total water in 2019, while groundwater represented 35%, or 1.24 billion cubic meters.

Riyadh topped the list in terms of water consumed by the Kingdom’s cities, with 1.089 billion cubic meters of drinking water, or 31% of the total consumption. It was followed by Makkah with 827 million cubic meters, or 24%.
Households consumed nearly 2.90 billion cubic meters of drinking water, representing 83% of total consumption last year, while the commercial consumption accounted for just 17%.

Riyadh had the largest number of consumers at 646,500, while Makkah had 345,800 last year.
