US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russia if the war in Ukraine does not come to an end soon, expressing deep frustration with Moscow's lack of progress toward reaching a peace agreement.
In a meeting held with NATO Secretary-General at the White House today, July 14, Trump warned that the US would enforce extremely high tariffs on Russia if no resolution was reached within 50 days.
He described the proposed tariffs as "secondary" but emphasized that they would be “very severe”.
Trump also expressed disappointment in Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that he had expected both sides to have reached an agreement two months ago.
During the meeting, Trump confirmed plans to send US weapons to Ukraine via NATO countries, including Patriot missile systems.
He added that NATO allies would purchase billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment from the US, which would then be rapidly deployed to the Ukrainian battlefield.
For his part, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte noted that alliance members would swiftly transfer the equipment to Ukraine, after which the US would resupply its allies.
