US President Donald Trump will likely issue a tariff notification for Japan without reaching a trade deal, unlike India, with which he indicated a possible agreement could be reached soon.
Trump stated in press statements on Wednesday that the US will likely maintain the 25% tariffs on Japanese imports, which were announced on July 7 and are set to take effect on Aug. 1.
He does not anticipate a broader trade agreement with Japan, criticizing its position in negotiations during bilateral negotiations.
Trump indicated that his administration may soon reach a trade deal with India, following Tuesday’s announcement that talks with Indonesia resulted in an agreement to set tariffs on its products at 19%.
