US threatens tariffs if UN shipping emissions deal passes

The United States has warned member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) against backing a proposal to impose levies on ships that exceed carbon emissions standards, threatening punitive measures including tariffs.

A US State Department spokesperson told Reuters Washington is taking the matter seriously and is preparing steps such as tariffs, port fees, and visa restrictions if the so-called “Net Zero Framework” is adopted during a special IMO session scheduled for October.

The spokesperson added that the US would encourage its partners and allies to take similar action, stressing that Washington believes the proposed deal would add costs to the shipping industry without effectively cutting emissions.

The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management confirmed it had received a verbal warning from US officials that the Netherlands could face tariffs or other retaliatory measures if it supported the proposal.

The London-based IMO has 176 member states and is responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution.
