Allowing Iran to impose transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz would set a dangerous and internationally unacceptable precedent, said Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of International Maritime Organization (IMO).
“What we cannot have is this different or parallel approach where another country introduces a different mechanism that is not in line with international practice and we don’t even know if it guarantees the safety of the ships,” Dominguez said in an interview with Bloomberg.
He added that IMO is working to re-establish the mechanisms that allowed ships to cross Hormuz before the war. Prior to the conflict, vessels generally crossed the waterway using what was known as an international traffic separation scheme.
Iranian state media earlier reported that control over the strait and the levy of transit fees were among Tehran’s ceasefire conditions.
