The prices of most petrochemicals declined last week. Ethylene decreased $100 to $1,295 a ton. Propylene lost $30 to $1,170 a ton. Polyethylene dropped $30 to $1,510 a ton, while polypropylene declined $15 to $1,470 a ton.
Aromatics bucked the trend on lower stockpiles. Benzene gained $20 and styrene added $20.
MEG rose $45 to $855 a ton for the first time in 8 weeks during which prices tumbled to below $1,000 a ton. Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corp (SABIC), the biggest producer of MEG, lowered November contract by $120 to $1,000 a ton.
Ammonia climbed $35 to $615 a ton because of production interruption in one of Sabic’s plants.

About Argaam Petrochemical Index:
It is the only index that provides a weekly capacity-weighted measure of the average change in international prices of a basket of petrochemicals produced in the Gulf region.
Internally -consumed products which are used as a feedstock for producing other petrochemicals and are not sold regularly in the international market like ethylene, propylene and ammonia represent smaller weight in the index.
Final products sold in international markets such as Polyethylene, polypropylene, MTBE, MEG and urea represent the biggest index weights.
Naphtha prices, the main feedstock benchmark, correlate negatively with the index. The index products’ weights are reviewed periodically.
As of Jan 1, 2002 the index started at 100 points.
