Saudi, Kuwait said to shutdown joint oil field for 2-week maintenance

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait will shut down the Wafra joint oil field for two weeks for planned maintenance on Monday night or Tuesday, Reuters reported, citing an unidentified Kuwaiti source.

The closure could give more time to resolve a dispute between the two countries over the shared area. But, it is unlikely to affect oil supplies from Saudi Arabia, the worlds biggest oil exporter.

Last month, the Saudi unit of Chevron told its partner, Kuwait Gulf Oil Company (KGOC), that it planned to shut down Wafra because it was facing problems getting work permits and other issues related to the right to operate with the Kuwaiti side. Kuwait dismissed the allegations.

In October, production at Khafji, another jointly operated oilfield, was halted by Saudi Arabia for environmental concerns.

Saudi Chevron currently operates the kingdom's share in both oil fields, while KGOC operates Kuwait's part.
