US President Donald Trump could impose tariffs on copper imports within weeks, several months ahead of the official decision deadline, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
In February, Trump directed the Department of Commerce to open an investigation into potential copper tariffs and report back within 270 days.
However, unnamed sources indicated that the case is likely to be resolved sooner, suggesting that the investigation already appears to be a mere formality.
An official stated that the report is progressing, with the possibility of reaching a conclusion before the 270-day deadline.
This pushed copper prices in New York up by 3.1% to a record high of $5.3740 per pound before trimming gains to $5.3005.
