Initial claims filings for US unemployment benefits declined in the week ended March 29, against forecasts for an uptick, signaling continued labor momentum in the world’s largest economy.
Applications decreased by 6,000 to 219,000 in total for the week, the Labor Department data showed today, April 3.
This came against forecasts for a rise to 227,000, as the previous week's data was revised upwards by 1,000 applications.
The four-week average, a steadier labor market indicator, fell by 1,250 to 223,000.
Meanwhile, investors are awaiting the US monthly labor report to be issued by the Department of Labor on Friday. Expectations suggest the addition of 140,000 new jobs in March, with the unemployment rate flat at 4.1%.
