The European Commission secured backing from EU member states and will move forward with implementing the first set of retaliatory measures against US tariffs, set to take effect as of April 15.
The EU is set to impose additional tariffs of approximately 25% on a range of US imports to counter the recently-introduced US duties on metals.
The EU is still evaluating its response to US tariffs on automobiles and other broader trade measures.
In its statement, the European Commission described the US tariffs as “unjustified and damaging, causing economic harm to both sides, as well as the global economy.”
The EU reiterated its clear preference for a negotiated solution with the US — one that is balanced and mutually beneficial.
