US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump left the G7 summit meeting in Canada, which brings together some of the world's most powerful leaders, a day earlier than scheduled due to escalating tensions in the Middle East region, where Israel is bombing Iranian nuclear and military sites.
Trump signed a joint statement urging peace and stability in the Middle East before departing the meeting, without concluding any new trade agreements.
“I have to be back early for obvious reasons,” Trump told reporters at the summit, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
"I wish I could stay for tomorrow, but they understand this. This is big stuff," he said. You probably see what I see, and I have to be back as soon as I can."
By leaving the summit early, Trump is abandoning several talks on trade and global security, which were intended to ease tensions over tariffs and other issues.
The annual G7 summit kicked off on Monday morning with bilateral meetings as usual. Trump stated at his first meeting that he is still in talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to reach a trade agreement.
