US President Donald Trump called on the European Union (EU) to levy tariffs of up to 100% on imports from China and India to increase pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine, the Financial Times reported.
The request came after a call between senior US and European officials in Washington, where they discussed ways to raise the economic cost of the conflict, the newspaper said, citing three people familiar with the matter.
“We’re ready to go, ready to go right now, but we’re only going to do this if our European partners step up with us,” one US official said.
Another official added that Washington is prepared to “match” any EU tariffs on China and India, which could lead to further US duty increases on imports from both countries.
