Saudi Arabia’s General Food Security Authority (GFSA) and the National Program to Reduce Food Loss and Waste (Li Tadum) announced the results of the second measurement of the Kingdom’s food loss and waste index (FLI).
The index fell from 33.1% to 27.9%, marking a 16% decrease compared with the 2019 baseline, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
Food loss fell to 12.1% from 14.2%, while food waste dropped to 15.8% from 18.8%.
The results will serve as a scientific basis for shaping future policies and expanding national initiatives to curb food loss and waste, GFSA Governor Ahmad Al-Fares said. He added that efforts involve government entities, the private sector and non-profit organizations to meet the program’s targets under Vision 2030.
Launched in 2017, Li Tadum seeks to enhance food supply chain efficiency, cut food loss and waste, promote cross-sector collaboration, redistribute surplus food, and raise consumer awareness to support sustainable practices and strengthen food security.
