Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won Nobel Peace Prize 2025 in recognition of her relentless efforts to promote democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee said in a statement on Friday that the award was given to Machado in acknowledgment of her pursuit of a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.
This comes as a disappointment to US President Donald Trump, who had sought the prize for his global efforts, most recently his participation in a peace deal between Israel and Hamas.
Trump has long expressed his conviction that he deserves the Nobel Prize, especially after it was previously awarded to former President Barack Obama in 2009 for his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation among nations.
The Nobel Prize, worth 11 million Swedish crowns, or about $1.2 million, was awarded in 2024 to Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
