OpenAI launched its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered web browser, ChatGPT Atlas, on Oct. 21, expanding beyond chat applications into the smart browser market.
The company said the browser will position ChatGPT as a primary gateway for online search, aiming to attract more traffic and generate revenue from digital advertising.
Atlas is available for macOS, with Windows, iOS, and Android versions expected in the coming months, OpenAI said.
The browser includes an Agent Mode, which enables it to browse and perform online tasks on behalf of users based on their search history and interests, while explaining each step of the process.
The launch follows CEO Sam Altman’s description of the product as “a rare once-in-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about.”
The move presents a challenge to Google Chrome, which has nearly three billion users worldwide, as Google integrates its Gemini AI technology into the browser.
The move could also heighten concerns among publishers that users’ reliance on AI-generated summaries may reduce traffic to traditional news and content websites.
