US imposes sanctions on Russian oil giants Lukoil, Rosneft

The US on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, to intensify economic pressure on Moscow.

In a statement, the US administration urged the Kremlin to immediately agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in the statement: “We encourage our allies to join us in and adhere to these sanctions,” stressing that Washington is prepared to take further measures if necessary.

He added that the sanctions come in response to President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to end what he described as “this senseless war,” noting that Rosneft and Lukoil represent a main lifeline for Russia’s war machine.

The new sanctions aim to undermine Russia’s ability to finance its military operations, amid growing international calls to end the war and resume negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
