LNG exports increased by 4% from 2024 to reach 429 million tonnes
Global liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports rose this year at their fastest pace in three years, according to estimates by shipping data analytics firm Kpler, driven by new supply coming onstream from North America.
The estimates showed global LNG exports increased by 4% from 2024 to reach 429 million tonnes, marking the largest annual rise since 2022. China and Japan remain the world’s largest buyers, jointly holding the top spot in 2025.
Kpler said the main driver behind the increase was higher output from projects including LNG Canada and the Plaquemines facility in the United States.
The United States is set to cement its position as a leading LNG exporter, becoming the first country in the world to ship more than 100 million tonnes of LNG this year. Supply is expected to continue rising, with output forecast to double by the end of the current decade.
Higher production and exports are weighing on prices in Asia and Europe. Asian gas prices are already nearing their lowest levels in a year, while European gas futures have fallen by more than 40% since the start of the year.
