Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Arsenio Dominguez welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in the Middle East, emphasizing that this step is a key pillar for restoring the stability of global supply chains and safeguarding the security of maritime crews.
In an official statement on Wednesday, Dominguez explained that protecting the health and safety of sailors and the global shipping industry was the main motivation behind welcoming the agreement, noting that recent geopolitical tensions directly impacted insurance and operational costs in one of the world’s most important waterways.
The Secretary-General also stated that the UN agency began immediate coordination with relevant parties to develop an "appropriate working mechanism" to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
