Saudi Polyolefins Co. (SPC), a 75 percent owned subsidiary of National Industrialization Co. (Tasnee), has awarded a contract to a consortium of ABB Lummus and Samsung for the construction of its new petrochemicals complex in Jubail Industrial City, the Saudi-based Aljazira newspaper reported, citing the company’s chief executive Mubarak Al Khafrah.

The complex, a joint venture between Tasnee’s subsidiary National Petrochemical Industrialization Company (NPIC) and Lyondell Basell, is set to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2003, with production expected to begin in the first quarter of 2004.

The facility will have an annual capacity of 450,000 tons of propylene and a similar amount of polypropylene. The polypropylene will be produced using Novolen technology to make homo-polymers and random copolymers, while the propylene factory will be fitted with Catofin technology owned by ABB Lummus.

The products are said to be sold locally and globally.

Lyondell Basell holds a 25 percent stake in $120 million SPC.
