Haramain high-speed rail will start its two-way trip between Makkah and Madinah as of September, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported, citing Al Shoula consortium which is implementing the project.
According to Al Shoula’s statement, four weekly trips will run between Makkah and Madinah, and by September 2019 they will be four daily trips.
The Saudi government has approved paying an additional cost of EUR210 million above the project’s budget, the statement said.
The high-speed rail line is a network connecting the Kingdom’s two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah through five stations including Jeddah, King Abdul Aziz International Airport and King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) in Rabigh, according to data compiled by Argaam.
In 2011, the Spanish-Saudi Al-Shoula consortium won a contract to develop the second phase of the rail project at a total cost of SAR 30.8 billion ($8.2 billion).
