Saudi banks reported a net profit of SAR 41 billion for fiscal year 2016, down by 5 percent year-on-year (YoY) mainly due to an increase in the provisions of credit losses, data compiled by Argaam showed.
The sector’s combined profits included SAR 410 million in non-recurring gains from land sales by Bank Aljazira and Riyad Bank, down from SAR 840 million non-recurring gains made in the same period last year.

National Commercial Bank (NCB), Saudi Arabia's largest bank by assets, posted the highest net profit at SAR 9.3 billion, or 23 percent of the sector’s total earnings in FY16; followed by Al Rajhi Bank, which contributed 17 percent at SAR 8 billion in profit, while Samba Financial Group came third with 12 percent of the sector’s total income.
Alinma Bank and Bank Albilad were the only two other banks to post an increase in net profit.
Alawwal Bank (formerly known as Saudi Hollandi Bank), saw a 47 percent drop in its net income, attributed to higher operating costs—which jumped 66 percent— and an increase in the provisions of credit losses. Bank Aljazira’s net profit fell 32 percent YoY, and Alistithmar Bank by 21 percent.

Combined assets for the sector amounted to SAR 2.2 trillion in fiscal year 2016, with a 2 percent growth rate YoY, led by NCB, which accounted for 20 percent of the sector’s assets.
The sector’s combined loans were 1.5 percent lower to SAR 1.4 trillion YoY, while client deposits edged up 1 percent to SAR 1.67 trillion compared to 2015.
