The total value of assets held by investment funds in Saudi Arabia jumped 31% to SAR 209.7 billion – the highest ever – in 2020, compared to SAR 159.96 billion in 2019, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
This increase was driven by a 12% rise in assets held by local investment funds, which represent 71% of total assets, to SAR 149.6 billion. Assets of foreign funds soared 127% to SAR 60.2 billion.
Investment funds are divided into two types, open-end and closed-end. Total assets of open-end funds stood at nearly SAR 180.8 billion, or 86% of total assets, while the assets of closed-end funds valued at approximately SAR 28.9 billion.
Investment funds hold local and foreign assets, which further include shares, bonds, cash instruments and realty investments.

The number of subscribers to Saudi investment funds went up by 29,200 to approximately 358,900 in 2020, compared to 2019.
