The first phase of the public transport network in Dammam is set to begin in 2022 with the bus project, according to Bader Al Sharif, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Technical Affairs at Sharqia Development Authority.

The project was supposed to begin last year, but was delayed because of the coronavirus outbreak, Al Sharif was quoted as saying by Al-Riyadh Newspaper.

On the other hand, he said that the Eastern region development strategy set by the authority was submitted to the Saudi King for approval, hoping that it will be approved this year.

In 2014, the Saudi Cabinet approved the implementation of the public transport project in Dammam and Qatif province with all its components, including trains and buses. The project was set to be implemented in seven years, according to data available in Argaam.

The project includes two main lines, the first linking Darin Island in the north to Qatif, passing through Dammam and Dhahran to the King Fahd Causeway, which connects Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.

The second line connects King Fahd Road to Dammam as a main artery in the region to King Fahd International Airport in the West.
