Consumer spending via POS transactions fall 1% to SAR 85.7 bln in September: SAMA

Consumer spending in the Kingdom retreated by 1% to nearly SAR 85.68 billion in September, from SAR 86.24 billion during the same period last year.

 

According to the Saudi Central Bank's (SAMA) monthly bulletin, total consumer spending since the beginning of this year reached SAR 787.1 billion, up 9% from the same period last year.

 

Consumer spending in Saudi Arabia includes total cash withdrawals and point-of-sale sales, as the following table shows:

POS transactions rose by 20% to SAR 40 billion in September, from SAR 33.21 billion in the same month last year.

 

Data showed that a total of 468.9 million transactions were processed through 899,700 POS in the month.

 

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using their ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Cash withdrawals declined by 14% to SAR 45.7 billion in September, from SAR 53.03 billion last year.

 

The withdrawals were processed through 16,820 ATMs and through 129.2 million transactions.
