Electricity grid
Saudi Arabia’s electrical energy consumption inched up by 0.2% year-on-year (YoY) to 289,300 gigawatt hour (GWh) in 2020, compared to 288,710 GWh in 2019, data from the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) showed.
Gross electrical energy production rose 1% YoY to about 338,030 GWh in 2020.

In 2020, the residential sector accounted for 48% of the aggregate electrical energy consumption, equivalent to 137,650 GWh. This was followed by the industrial sector with 20%, commercial sector with more than 14%, and the government sector with about 13%.

The Western Region accounted for the largest share of the aggregate electrical energy consumption by 89,610 GWh, equivalent to 31%. This was followed by the Central Region with 30% (86,420 GWh) and the Eastern Province by 29%. The Southern Region consumed the lowest share with 10%.
