POS weekly transactions hit SAR 12.84 bln: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached nearly SAR 12.84 billion in the week ended Oct. 1, rising 23% week-on-week (WoW), data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

 

Data showed that 160.6 million transactions were processed during the week.

 

POS transactions represent what consumers spend using ATM and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Except for the hotels sector, which declined by 10% WoW, all the remaining sectors saw an increase last week, led by the education sector with a 116% WoW surge. It was followed by the telecommunications and food and beverages sectors with a 69% and 48% WoW hike, respectively.

   

During the week, consumer spending focused on the food and beverages sector, reaching nearly SAR 2.1 billion, representing almost 16% of total sales. It was followed by the restaurants and cafes sector at SAR 1.65 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions in value with almost SAR 3.94 billion, representing 31% of total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.9 billion, as indicated below:
