The Water & Electricity Regulatory Authority’s (WERA) board, chaired by Minister of Energy, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, approved several amendments to the regulatory framework of the Renewable Energy. Generation (REG) System for Self-Consumption.

The adopted regulatory framework set the allowed conditions for systems for self-consumption either connected to the distribution system, the transmission system, or as off-grid systems, which aim to generate electricity from renewable energy systems, the state-owned SPA reported.

It also set a maximum limit of no more than 30 megawatts for the capacity of these systems.

All existing or future electricity activities, are subject to the regulatory framework, WERA said, adding that those practicing any of these activities shall have a valid license from WERA.

These amendments build on the energy system efforts to encourage the use of renewables, increase the number of beneficiaries, and contribute to the Vision 2030 goals.

WERA called on those willing to build, install and operate renewable energy generation systems for self-consumption to view the details of the regulatory framework on its website.
