The New Year's Eve fireworks at Burj Khalifa have been replaced this year with a laser show, Gulf News reported, citing government officials.

"Lasers are safer than fireworks. The aim is to facilitate all simple traffic and ensure flow," Brigadier Abdullah Ali Al Ghaith, Director of the General Department of Organisations, Protective Security and Emergency, told the newspaper.

Ahmed Thani Al Matrooshi, Managing Director, Emaar Properties added the company replaced fireworks with a laser show to introduce something new to stop using old methods.

Several government entities such as the Road and Transport Authority, Dubai Police, Dubai Civil Defence and Emaar have drawn up an extensive plan for managing movement of vehicles, public buses and the public in the Downtown area.
