POS transactions decline 6% to SAR 6.88 bln in week ending Sept. 19

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions dropped by 6% to SAR 6.88 billion in the week ending Sept. 19, 2020, from SAR 7.33 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) showed.

  

Data showed that a total of 64.4 million transactions were processed in the week ending Sept. 19.

All sectors, except for furniture and jewelry, witnessed a decline in POS sales during the week ending Sept. 19. The furniture sector recorded a 7% rise in POS sales, followed by jewelry with 2%.

The education sector reported the steepest decline of 51%, with sales amounting to SAR 104.9 million, followed by the recreation & culture sector (18%), and the telecommunications sector (14%).

Consumer spending focused on food & beverages sector during the same week valued at nearly SAR 1.1 billion, followed by restaurants and cafes sector with SAR 894.1 million and the healthcare sector with SAR 611.7 million.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities with SAR 2.26 billion, representing 33% of the total sales, followed by Jeddah with nearly SAR 1.13 billion.
