Qualified foreign investors (QFIs) were net purchasers of SAR 18.75 billion worth of stocks on the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul) in 2020, down by 79% year-on-year (YoY), compared to SAR 91.2 billion in 2019, according to data issued by the Saudi bourse.
Foreign investors bought SAR 156.1 billion worth of shares and sold shares at a total value of SAR 137.3 billion in 2020.
QFIs include SWAP agreements, qualified investors, resident investors, discretionary portfolio management (DPMs), and strategic partners.
Foreign investors recorded the highest purchase in June 2019 at SAR 4.9. In the same month, the final phase of Saudi Arabia’s inclusion in FTSE Russell Emerging Market Index was executed.
August recorded the second highest value of net foreign purchases with SAR 3.1 billion, as it witnessed the review of Saudi Aramco weight on MSCI Index after adding bonus shares and executing all periodic changes.

Net sales of Saudi individuals in all categories amounted to SAR 31.8 billion in 2020, compared to SAR 42.2 billion a year earlier.
Net purchases by Saudi investors stood at SAR 1.538 trillion, against net sales worth SAR 1.570 trillion.
Saudi investors include retail investors, high net worth investors, individual professional investors, and individual DPMs.
June recorded the highest net retail sales worth SAR 6.3 billion, followed by October with SAR 5.1 billion.
