POS transactions fall 36% to SAR 6.12 bln in week ending July 24: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell by 36% to SAR 6.12 billion in the week ending July 24, from SAR 9.53 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

Data showed that a total of 84.7 million transactions were processed in the week ending July 24.

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors declined during the week, except for hotels that rose by 7%.

Education led the declining sectors with a plunge of 93%, or SAR 3.13 million, followed by construction materials with 66%.

Consumer spending focused on the restaurants & cafes sector in the week ending July 24, with nearly SAR 1.16 billion, followed by food & beverages sector with SAR 1.07 billion, and clothes & footwear with SAR 533 million.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 1.67 billion, representing 27% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 898.1 million.
