The Ministry of Energy announced the start of the trial run of the first turbine in Dumat Al Jandal project in Al Jouf to exploit wind power in electricity production on July 28.
The first-of-its-kind project comes within the framework to produce 50% of the Kingdom's electricity from renewable sources by 2030, according to a video posted on the official Twitter account for Vision 2030.
The project has a total production capacity of 400 megawatts (MW), and contains 99 turbines - each 205 meters above the ground with a production capacity of 4.2 MW each.
The first project in the Kingdom and the largest of its kind in the Middle East will provide 70,000 housing units with electricity and remove 988,000 tons of CO2 annually.
The project reinforces the national energy mix's objectives of achieving 50% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.
It achieved a record of lowest flat cost of electricity production in 2019 of $0.0199 per KW/H.
According to data compiled by Argaam, Saudi Arabia’s Renewable Energy Project Development Office (REPDO) awarded the $500 million Dumat Al Jandal wind project to a consortium headed by France’s EDF Energies Nouvelles and Abu Dhabi’s Masdar.
