POS transactions hit SAR 10.5 bln in week ending Jan. 29: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached SAR 10.45 billion in the week ending Jan. 29, from SAR 8.77 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.  

   

Data showed that 125.2 million transactions were processed in the week.  

  

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed a rise in POS transactions during the week, led by telecommunications sector with a 38% increase. It was followed by food & beverages and jewelry sectors, with increments of 35% and 28%, respectively.

Consumer spending focused on the food & beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.73 billion, followed by the restaurants & cafes sector with SAR 1.43 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 3.20 billion, representing 31% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.58 billion.
